STDs

What Are STDs?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are infections that transmits through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Usually caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites it affects both men and women. Commonly observed STDs are chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV/AIDS, genital herpes, human papillomavirus (HPV), and trichomoniasis. 365 Days Doc says while some STDs may show no symptoms it is important to have regular screenings for early detection and treatment. Depending upon the severity of the STDs it may even cause  infertility, and even organ damage

Symptoms of STDs

  • Depending on the infection the symptoms of STDs varies.
  • Pain during urination, unusual genital discharge, sores or blisters on the genital area, itching, swelling, or redness.
  • Chlamydia and Gonorrhea: Lower abdominal pain
  • Syphilis: Rashes and flu-like symptoms.

As we all know, HIV is the worst of the STDs, it may start as a mild fever and fatigue but as it progresses it can cause severe immune damage. Some STDs persist for years and that’s why essential check-up is necessary.

How STDs Spread

Unprotected sexual contact is the main reason for STDs. They can also be transmitted through blood, shared needles or from an infected mother to the baby Skin-to- Skin contact with sores can also be the reason for transmission . It can also transmit through blood transfusion Sometimes it may transmit from individuals who do not have any symptoms at all and that’s why regular screening is important.

Preventive Measures for STDs

Safe sex measures are always advised by using condoms and dental dams consistently. Individuals having multiple test partners should undergo regular screening that helps in early detection. 365 days doc recommends also getting vaccinated for HPV and hepatitis B provides additional protection. Not sharing needles and using sterilized medical equipment is important. An open communication with healthcare providers, mutual monogamy with an uninfected partner that promotes a safe and healthier lifestyle is important
